George H. Davis Travel Fellowship

The University of Arizona Foundation has established the George H. Davis Travel Fellowship in honor of George H. Davis, Executive Vice President and Provost at the University of Arizona from 2000 to 2007, to help promising faculty members in any field, during the first five years of their appointment, become widely recognized for their work. The fellowship, with a maximum allowance of $5000, is intended to help defray the costs of travel, lodging, meals, and project related expenses while participating in an international research collaboration or creative endeavor, or attending a nationally and/or internationally recognized professional meeting with the purpose of making an oral presentation of research findings, scholarship and/or creative activities.

The first round of awards will be made this fall. One to two awardees will be selected according to the criteria listed below.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible a faculty member must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be within 5 years of their initial employment at the time of submitting the application;
  2. Only one application per faculty member will be reviewed during the same calendar year.

The application must include:

  1. A brief curriculum vitae including a record of the applicant's achievements, e.g., publications, technical presentations, artistic accomplishments, patents, honors, etc.;
  2. A cover letter, not longer than 1000 words, describing the international collaboration or the professional meeting to be attended, the support being sought and how the fellowship will help the young faculty member obtain national and/or international recognition;
  3. Two letters of recommendation from established researchers acquainted with the applicant work;
  4. If participating in a national/international meeting, a copy of the Abstract submitted for the oral presentation.

Selection of Recipient(s)

Selection Committee: The Vice President for Research will appoint a chair for the Selection Committee composed of 5 members.

Basis of Selection: Recipients shall be selected on the basis of past performance (30%), the overall quality of the research or creative activities as judged by the material provided/mentioned in the application (40%), and the recommendation letters from colleagues acquainted with the work of the applicant (30%).
